چکیده

PARAMICS is a state-of-the-art, parallel ‘microscopic’ traffic simulator, developed in a collaboration between EPCC and SIAS Ltd., for simulations of traffic congestion in large-scale road networks. Individual vehicle and driver characteristics are modelled, responding to perceived road and junction conditions. To allow traffic planners to predict and attempt to rectify potential congestion problems, within the trunk road network of central Scotland at peak times, requires the real-time simulation of some 200,000 vehicles. The simulator is being implemented in the data-parallel C* language on the CM-200 massively parallel computer at EPCC, which has the potential to deliver the substantial computing demands required. From a detailed description of the Scottish road network, and the traffic within it, vehicles’ movements and flow summaries can be displayed graphically, highlighting the formation of areas of congestion and allowing the probable causes to be identified.

Development and Performance Evaluation of an ITS-Ready Microscopic Traffic Model for Irvine, California

The research in this paper presents the detailed development and on-line evaluation of a microscopic traffic flow model for the city of Irvine in Southern California. This effort is the first stage of evaluating micro-simulators in terms of their ability to model and analyze Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) under faster-than-real-time conditions. We utilize “Paramics,” a particularly pr...

Paramics Simulation of Periodic Oscillations Caused by Network Geometry

Traffic oscillations such as stop-and-go waves in a traffic system can be caused by reasons such as instabilities. In this paper, we intend to study a type of periodic oscillations caused by network geometry with a microscopic simulation model, Paramics. With careful tuning in Paramics, we successfully simulate such periodic oscillations, in which traffic states change periodically between a di...

Comparison of PARAMICS and GETRAM/AIMSUN Microscopic Traffic Simulation Tools

PARAMICS and GETRAM/AIMSUN are two microscopic traffic simulation tools that are capable of modelling the functions of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in a large network. This paper compares the Version 4.0 of PARAMICS with Version 4.0 of GETRAM/AIMSUN, based on the experience gained in using them to model a network with a freeway and arterials. The simulation tools were compared in six asp...
